Baker Hostetler is one of the nation's top 100 law firms with more than 700 attorneys serving clients domestically and internationally. The firm was established in 1916 by Newton D. Baker, former U.S. Secretary of War and Mayor of Cleveland. Today, Baker Hostetler has offices in 11 U.S. cities across four different time zones. Baker Hostetler is a multidisciplinary firm with 11 practice groups offering more than 55 areas of practice.
THE ISSUE
Baker Hostetler is constantly looking for ways to improve management of its complex benefits structure and various unique elements of the legal industry. They were looking for a self-service portal with a user-friendly feel. They also wanted to be able to maintain the system in-house.
THE SOLUTION
Baker Hostetler decided to go with NuViewHR because of the system’s ease of customization. Many systems accommodate user-defined fields, but Baker Hostetler felt that NuViewHR took this capacity to the next level. By allowing users to add their own fields wherever necessary, this enabled them to build entire tables and forms without having to ask their IT departments for assistance. The firm also noted that the open enrollment process was easy and intuitive. Like most firms in the legal industry, Baker Hostetler has many unique data points that they track. Therefore, it is crucial to be able to store this information and have the ability to easily report on key data.
THE BENEFITS
NuViewHR has also helped Baker Hostetler reduce its annual maintenance fees. “It’s been very helpful to house all of our information in one central location,” Joe Sherman stated. “It’s allowed us to take stronger ownership of HR information, and remove any redundancies. It’s been easier to share that data with other departments and offices.” He also commented that they have been able to produce accurate point-in-time reports, which had been a challenge with their prior HR system.
THE RIGHT CHOICE
With the ease of creating their own user-defined fields, Baker Hostetler has been able to create an additional 20 forms for use in their production system and has also modified many other existing forms. Integrating custom elements into the structure of the system is a great feature for the firm and has made the reporting process much easier. Baker Hostetler also commented that NuView is always willing to listen to their concerns and help find solutions. “The system is always proving itself to be indispensable,” Sherman said.
